Chenxinran Elise Shen

HCI Researcher

My research focuses on Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), particularly on how alterations in voice and visual presentation influence self-perception and perceptions of others. My aim is to enhance communication outcomes by increasing empathy and reducing bias. I leverage AI and VR technologies to achieve these objectives. My work spans various CMC scenarios, including intergenerational communication, gaming, and online dating. Two of my papers, for which I was the first author, received Honorable Mention Awards at CHI 2024 and CHI 2021 🏆.

I recently completed my Master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, under the co-supervision of Prof. Joanna McGrenere and Prof. Dongwook Yoon. My project, which aims to improve intergenerational communication through VR, has been accepted by CHI 2024.

Prior to this, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Toronto, under the guidance of Prof. Daniel Wigdor and Dr. Zhicong Lu. During this time, 3 of our Social Computing papers were accepted by CSCW and CHI conferences.

I am actively looking for PhD opportunities starting in the fall of 2025.
